PADDY FARRELL R.I.P

PADDY FARRELL R.I.P

IAN WILLIAMS23 Nov 2021 - 11:26

Former Club Secretary passed away 20 November 2021 aged 87.

It is impossible to disguise the sadness and sorrow we felt upon hearing that this larger-than-life icon had passed away, nor would I wish to do so. But as we mourn his passing it is also an opportunity to celebrate a life that to say the last was well lived. I first met Paddy when I was invited to join the Committee of Eastwood Town F.C and within a week it dawned on me that along with Les George and a few other trusty volunteers that the club that had joined the then Midland League was destined for some grand times.

Officially his position was Public Relations Officer but his contribution was far more valued than writing reports of games. It was during this period that the Social Club became a possibility and it was Paddy’s expertise in resolving the minefield of legal problems that cropped up that eventually made the venture a reality.

The arrival of Bill Jaffrey as Manager (an appointment sanctioned by Paddy) began what to us was a Golden era for the club both in terms of prestige among opponents and some trophy laden seasons thanks to exploits on the field of play. I can personally verify that many local clubs benefitted from Paddy’s advice which was always forthcoming with a smile and I can also testify that his influence stemmed from the high esteem in which he was held in both the local and national FA Associations.

It is literally impossible for me to list all the improvements and achievements the “Badgers” underwent during Paddy’s long and unselfish time and I know how heartbroken he was when in 2014 events beyond his control meant the end of his involvement. We will all have our individual memories of the “Badgers” and famous FA Cup victories against the likes of Wrexham and Wycombe and a few others from a higher status will be long remembered. I do know though that the trophy that he coveted more than any other was the Notts. Senior Cup which found an almost permanent home in Coronation Park’s trophy cabinet.

The number of messages of condolence that have appeared from people and clubs from well outside the immediate area is a testament to his contribution to the sporting scene of our locality and perfectly illustrates why the fond memory and humanitarian instincts of this outstanding personality will be his legacy.

It must not be forgotten that Paddy’s contribution to Eastwood Town became possible thanks to the tireless and sustained duty of his lovely wife and soulmate Pat who was instrumental in providing the stable home life that allowed him to unwind. And as everybody knows her own efforts in making Coronation Park such a welcome attraction for visitors is immeasurable.

Please join me in extending our compassionate condolences to Pat, daughter Helen (who writes beautiful poetry) son Peter (A former “Badgers” goalkeeper) and the wider Farrell family both here and north of the border.

Be thankful that we lived during his lifetime.
