Eastwood CFC's superb F.A Vase cup run came to a disappointing end, losing 4 goals to nil away at step 5 opposition Deeping Rangers. Eastwood travelled full of confidence having already visited two step 5 clubs in Quorn FC and Ilkeston Town and came away with victories to set up the last 32 ties against Deeping.
As always Eastwood were backed by a fantastic large away support for the game but unfortunately couldn't produce the same level of performance as previous rounds. Eastwood was virtually at full strength apart from injured Aaron Short and suspended Billy Brooks.
In the first half, the home side made their intentions known from the start and started very much on the front foot forcing several set plays. Jake Pearson produced the first save of the game blocking an effort from Mooney at his near post, from another set play with a dangerous ball delivered into the penalty which took a deflection of an Eastwood defender but thankfully for the visitors the ball struck the top of the upright. This seemed to spur Eastwood into life and eventually settled into the game and started to enjoy more possession forcing several set plays of their own. Off one of the set plays Chay Betteridge had a shot blocked on the six-yard line. Eastwood couldn't create any more clear goalscoring opportunities against a well-organised defence.
At the end of the half, Paddy Webb created a half-chance for himself making a powerful run and cutting in from the right flank with his effort being blocked.
Half-Time 0.0
For the first 10 minutes of the half again with the play being even Deeping began to take control. Deeping scored the first goal of the game Johnson smashed the ball across Pearson into the roof of the net. Eastwood tried instantly to get themselves back into the game but it was Deeping who doubled their lead 10 minutes later. Mooney swivelled with his back to goal to finish with a superb strike.
Although Eastwood effort couldn't be faulted Deeping were now in full control of the tie.On 88 minutes Deeping added a third goal when the very impressive Schiavi broke clear and rounded Pearson to score. Deeping added a fourth goal on 90 minutes when Johnson stabbed home at the far post.
Full-Time 4.0
Eastwood has enjoyed a great run in the competition playing their 6th game and were desperate to advance to the last 16. But Deeping stepped up their game in the second half and totally dominated the half for a thoroughly deserved victory.
Eastwood now gets back to their pre-Christmas league form starting at home on Saturday.
