MATCH PREVIEW - Saturday 29th March 2025

Zander Shayler24 Mar - 18:07

We are back at home this weekend where Newark & Sherwood United are our opponents for the first time this campaign.

Following a four week absence from Coronation Park the First Team are back on home soil looking to add another important three points to their total.

The visitors go in to Saturday’s match having won just two from their last fifteen in the league and away from home the last league win was mid December. In the Highwaymen last outing, former Red Badger Kameron Campbell gave Newark a 9th minute lead, before two goals in seven minutes turned the game on its head in favour of Gresley. Finlay Barker extended Rovers lead three minutes into the second half. Substitute Kieran Cummings did pull one back on the 57th minute but the struggling visitors managed to hold on to inflict United’s fifteenth defeat of the season.

Previous meetings: Believe it or not the two sides haven’t met this season with the return fixture taking place next weekend. Eastwood earned the double over Newark last campaign with successive 2-1 wins the most recent of which took place at Station Road in November 2023 with goals from Tyler Blake and Tyreece Robinson. Before that the last meeting at Coronation Park was over eighteen months ago, Ryan Tait had given Eastwood the lead shortly after Tyreece Robinson had been dismissed. The ten men Red Badgers doubled their lead a minute from time through substitute Kamani Wilson, Ryan Ebanks did pull a goal back in injury time but it proved to be just a consolation. Before last season Eastwood had lost all seven previous match-ups.

Player Watch: Former Ilkeston Town and Shepshed Dynamo winger Kieran Cummings is certainly a player to watch. The forward returned to Newark at the end of last season and has been on fine form this campaign, netting on twenty-eight occasions leaving him third in the league’s goalscoring charts. Among the Newark squad there is numerous familiar faces including Wayde Hines and Kameron Campbell alongside the manager Romaine Graham.

Squad Update: Ball & Thomas have no fresh injury concerns with Aaron Opoku, Daniel Elliott and Aaron O’Connor all returning to the pitch last weekend. Lavell White is still out, while Marcus Marshall looks unlikely to feature this season. Alfie Flynn, Finnley Commons and Toby Woodward will all be pushing to be included in the match day squad as the management duo face a healthy selection headache.
